Chinese wonderkid Ye finished top amateur

12/21/2008

China’s teenage golf sensation Ye Jian-feng finished the leading amateur in this week’s US$750,000 Volvo Masters of Asia.

The 17 year old upstaged many of the stars on the Asian Tour when he fired a final round five-under-par 67 at Thai Country Club.

That left him with a four-round aggregate of two-under-par 286 – an outstanding performance from the youngster.

He finished in a tie for 25th place in what is the season-ending Tour Championship on the Asian Tour.

The event features the top-65 players from the Order of Merit with some of the top amateurs in the region also invited.

Ye claimed this year’s China Amateur Open and also qualified to play in the last two Volvo China Opens. He is also a member of the national team.

The laidback, likeable and lightweight Ye, is just 173 cms tall, weighs 58 kgs and plays off a plus four handicap.

He nailed an eagle, and five birdies on the last day with the only blemish on his scorecard being a disappointing double-bogey six on the last.

The star in the making comes from Shenzhen and plays his golf at Sand River Golf Club, where his father coaches him.

His English name is Benny and he has a brother a year older called Kevin who is also a top amateur.
