Green Around the Greens

12/21/2008

Volvo has a passion for the environment and the Thai Country Club, venue for the 2008 Volvo Masters of Asia is alive with flora and fauna living cheek-by-jowl with staff, spectators and superstars.

The greens at the Thai Country Club are perfect for the players to putt on, but so too are the greens in the sense of the environment in which the championship is played.

A riot of colour with bougainvillea, sunflower, wallflower, lotus flower and water-lily, not to mention a thousand-plus palm trees around the Thai Country Club, the perfect backdrop to the end-of-season tour championship.

And, in the air, lending their vocal support to the players in the Volvo Masters of Asia, many different species of birds, the most conspicuous the Mina bird with its distinctive call.

Lizards and snakes abound also, with the extensive water features around the Thai Country Club brimming with a dozen species of fish, insects and colourful insects completing an impressive array of animal life lending the home habitat to the Volvo Masters of Asia.

“Alongside Quality and Safety, Environmental Care is a vital component to the Volvo brand and our golf championships are held on golf courses with a good environmental record,” explains Per Ericsson, President & CEO, Volvo Event Management.

Khun Chawalit, Golf Operations Manager at the Thai Country Club explains, “We have this year created some new environmental buffer zones, which have worked very well and the number of species on site and the numbers of each species are both on the increase.”

Meanwhile, Australian Marcus Both, one of five co-leaders going into the final round of the 2008 Volvo Masters of Asia says the players also appreciate the setting.

“Look,” he says, “We may look pretty much focused out there, in our own little world, but you are definitely aware of the environment, especially the wildlife and the colours that abound and whilst they don’t distract you, a small bird singing or a lizard watching you can definitely lift your spirits when things are not going so well.”

Marcus and his fellow contenders for the Volvo Masters of Asia will be hoping for an abundance of birdies not only on the Thai Country Club course but also on their scorecards on the final day’s play.
